Hang ups. I have a few.
Before I tell you what they are. Let me tell you how I know they exist.
It’s me noticing something in someone or something else and feeling: Righteous. Or petty. Or like I have to overly justify myself.
Yes, it’s all my stuff. It doesn’t really have much to do with the other person or the situation - apart from their role in signalling what’s going on within me. Helpful, really!
Here are some of my writerly hangups that I’ve been contemplating lately.
That I write romance and not literary fiction
Back in my 20s, I was a literary fiction snob. I never read genre fiction, hell no. Now I write romance and I feel like I need to justify how my books are actually emotionally deep - and not just ‘silly, little romances.’
That I write young adult and not adult fiction
Even though 50% of readers of young adult fiction are adults, there’s this sense that writing for young adults isn’t as worthy.
That I live in Australia and not the US where the biggest book market is
My books are set in Australia, in Adelaide, to be exact. But I feel like I need to wave my flag and say, ‘Hey, over here, look at this, it’s worth a read!’
That my novels are self published not traditionally published
I’ve experienced both traditional publishing and self-publishing. I chose the later for my novels because I love creative control. But I do feel judged sometimes. As though the quality of my books can’t be as good. I believe they are.
Anyway, hangups. I’ve decided it’s time to let them go. I’m sending them to the wind. And I’m getting on with the business at hand, which is - the launch of my second novel, Everything’s Absolutely Fine.
